Health, Safety and Environment

MISSION

Dewet Drilling regards the health and safety of people and protection of the environment of prime importance and we exercise our drilling activities in such a manner and take such precautionary measures as may be necessary not to unduly endanger the lives of people nor to cause any undue disturbance to the natural environment. We actively strive to raise the health, safety and environmental awareness of our employees, suppliers and customers.

HEALTH AND SAFETY ACTIONS

  • Strict regard to safety is imperative, and the correct safety equipment is utilised at all times and strict adherence to any manufacturer's equipment safety warnings and operation instructions are maintained at all times.
  • All working personnel wear applicable safety equipment and protective clothing while on a drill site. Personnel who do not normally wear overalls shall wear hard hats where required. Safety boots meet the minimum standards i.e. steel toe capped, oil, acid and slip resistant.
  • Fuels and lubricants are handled and stored in such a manner not to induce spontaneous or accidental ignition.
  • Multi-purpose fire extinguishers are supplied to all drilling rigs and compressors. Sites for open fires are cleared and chosen to ensure adequate fire prevention.
  • All drilling sites are provided with and maintained in an easily accessible position with an adequate first aid outfit. A member of staff suitably qualified in the administration of first aid is always on site.
  • In case of physical injury or electrical shock, an immediate on-site medical assessment of the case is made and based on the seriousness of the medical case, an appropriate treatment and/or medical casualty evacuation plan is executed. Emergency evacuation includes suitable arrangements with Medical Rescue International. On site communication is effected through UHF radio communication through Dewet Drilling base at Rasesa, Botswana or through satellite telephone link.
  • In case of adverse weather i.e. a lightning storm, drilling operations are ceased in order to avoid potential injury to personnel.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACTIONS

In the execution of our drilling activities we observe and comply with the following general practical measures pertaining to the protection of the environment:

  • Accommodation for employees includes appropriate sanitary facilities.
  • Access routes to drilling sites are chosen and cleared in such a manner that the natural environment is not unduly disturbed.
  • All refuse and drill scrap is deposited in suitable containers provided for that purpose and suitable precautionary measures are employed to prevent loose debris from spreading. Containers are regularly collected and the contents thereof emptied at Botswana Government refuse disposal sites.
  • Drip pans are used to prevent pollution of topsoil from spillages of lubricating fluids or fuel from drilling rigs. Where spillage does occur, it is cleaned up immediately by removing the spillage with the penetrated soil and the contaminated soil is treated with BIO-BREAK Oil spill bio-remediation agent & oil stain remover before disposal thereof at Botswana Government operated disposal sites.
  • All land excavations are backfilled with subsoil and leveled off with topsoil to a level of 10 cm above ground level. No foreign material such as cement or other rubble is introduced in such backfilling operations.
  • All drilling sites are rehabilitated adequately on completion of operations to enhance regrowth of natural vegetation.
  • Raw materials and resources are prudently utilised.

OBSERVANCE

  • We continually comply and observe applicable laws, statutory requirements, health, safety and environmental standards as well as additional requirements imposed by lawful authority as minimum standard.
  • We ensure that all our operational units have appropriate procedures and facilities to ensure that standards are met.
  • We co-operate with all relevant environmental agencies.
  • We co-operate with all relevant environmental agencies.
  • We conduct regular audits of compliance to requirements and same are regularly reviewed at top management level.
